Spanish Art of the 21st Century in the Contemporary Art Collection of Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid

Curator: Maria de Corral

The exhibition is organized within Russia — Spain Year 2011
with the support of «Alliance» Oil Company (Russia) and Técnicas Reunidas (Spain)

Participating artists: Juan Uslé, Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Sergio Prego, José Manuel Ballester, Jorge Galindo, Laura Torrado, Antoni Muntadas, Jordi Colomer, Ángela de la Cruz, Pello Irazu, Cristina Lucas and others.

The «Fiction and Reality» show at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art is held within Russia — Spain Year 2011. The project presents works by Spanish artists form the collection at the Patio Herreriano Museum. The Museum opened in the city of Valladolid in 2002. Its collection comprises oeuvres by Spanish masters dated from 1918 to the present, which have been aquired by the Association «Contemporary Art Collection» since 1987. The Collection counts over 1000 works, and is considered to be the biggest collection of contemporary Spanish art. The works acquired by Spanish prívate companies are donated to the Association and are exhibited at the Patio Herreriano Museum.

The curator of the exhibition is the chief coordinator of the Collection — Maria de Corral, world famous art historian. For the project in Moscow she has selected works which best illustrate the full spectrum of contemporary Spanish art. The exhibition will include a range of works in various media — painting, video, photography, installation, sculpture, drawings — created in the past decade, and will feature artists who are all important figures in the contemporary Spanish art scene.

The key theme selected for the show by Maria de Corral is the interplay of fiction and reality. The curator states that the past decade forced us to review the notions of the real and the virtual worlds. With the development of new technologies the gap between reality and fiction has become enormous. Fiction and reality are the new source of inspiration for the artists of this century.

The first exhibition room presents photography. Almost all works feature people. Photographs by artists Damiàn Ucieda and Laura Torrado create the illusion of action. Whereas Damiàn’s characters look like imaginary film actors, Laura Torrado makes up theatrical scenes marked by incredible femininity. In the works by the artists’ duo Cabello and Carceller girls dress up as David Bowie and Brad Pitt, and Txomin Badiola unfolds before the viewer a multi-episode drama.

In the black and white graphic works by José Miguel Pereñíguez people vanish completely, and abstract symbols take their place. Executed with academic precision, these drawings conjure up images of dreams. Chus García Fraile conjures up enchanting images of a nocturnal city with surprisingly simple means, Ester Partegás plays with consumer society imagery.

Maggie Cardelús, Concha Pérez and Sandra Gamarra create an illusion of intimacy. The artists abandon traditional techniques, and combine photography, sculpture, installation, and painting. The next room develops the idea of space, employing solely painterly medium. Alfonso Albacete creates a realistic interior, which, in its turn, serves as a background for an impossibly bright abstract composition. In Philipp Fröhlich’s dream-like scene, house interiors suddenly merge with wild nature. Jorge Galindo combines surrealism, kitch and pop-art. Abstract works by Felicidad Moreno and Nico Munuera are also exhibited in this gallery.

In the next room, the works on display are executed in mixed media to show how artists use new technologies mixed with traditional painting techniques, to expand the boundaries of painting . The exhibition is concluded with video works by Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Sergio Prego, El Perro and Cristina Lucas.

The thematic division is only arbitrary, since any real classification demands detachment which is virtually impossible when dealing with the art of our contemporaries.

All works displayed at the «Fiction and Reality» show are not only reflective of the true Spanish nature, but they have enough creative potential to be understood outside of the country of origin. The curator believes that this project presents the most accessible way of communication between the two countries — the laguage of art is international as it blurs territorial, social, and language borders.

***

Information on the curator:

Imitation of Life (2007) heißt dieses Video des spanischen Künstlers Manolo Bautista.

NOT REAL, BUT TRUE

On the digital words of MANOLO BAUTISTA (E)

Translated from the German by Lucinda Renninson

At some point, it seems the piece of crystal in the chandelier above the hotel desk must have found it all terribly dull: checking in, checking out. Yawn. With a sharp jolt, the little piece of glass springs from its anchorage in the lustre above the reception and sets off on a journey through the entire building. It floats away from the desk towards the lift, racces along the corridors, through air conditioning systems and shafts, squeezes through the holes in the drum of a washing machine, tumbles through the bar and in passing seduces the ice cubes to jump up into the air as well. Finally, whoosh, it clicks back into its old place in the crystal lustre above the reception desk.

Imitation of Life (2007) is the title of this video by the Spanish artist Manolo Bautista. In search of new forms of visual representation in his photographic works and videos, Bautista employs animations and other means of digital image processing. To create a widde range of fictional and real constellations, for instance, he uses software that not only moves simulated objects according to his envisaged scenarios, but is also caplable of moving them in the exact same way that real objects would behave.

Despite this technical perfection, Bautista sometimes makes his objects caper about in a fashion contrary to all the rules of physics. In his video Snooker Hotshots (2006), for instance, he adapts TV-recordings of a snooker tournament so that the balls roll around in circles, as if stirred by the hand of a ghost. Or they set off towards the pocket in the side without being touched by a cue or another ball, as if driven to disappear by some spiritual motivation rather than a physical impetus.

Several of Bautista’s photographic works derive their considerable atmospheric attraction from the spatial decontextualisation of objects. At the centre of Dead on the Dance Floor II (2006) there is a racing boat together with its helmeted pilot, which seems to be floating in a room over a set of mirror tiles. Another work shows a bicycle, casually leaning against the foot of a lamp post topped by a festively glittering chandelier instead of a sober street lamp.

In another series of works, Bautista starts out from visits to the zoo to investigate the virtual character of its artificially reproduced habitats in enclosures and cages. One shot, for instance, shows a cage elaborately equipped with a climbing tree and ropes; here, the artificially reproduced natural situation is taken ad absurdum by an equally artificial inhabitant – a rag doll.

The photographic work Noche Americana (2006) is also concerned with bizarre relations between nature and culture: a forest, the moon or a pale winter sun in the background, a camping van and a frozen stretch of water in the foreground. A crouched man is seen skinning a piece of game, while a crowd of penguins among the trees quietly watch his activities. It is almost as if we are taking a look into the “open-air human enclosure” of a wildlife park, in which animals that are actually at home in completely different biotopes can study man in his natural habitat, as he carries out the procedures necessary for feeding.

But the title of the work reveals a second level. “Noche americana” (American night) is the Spanish equivalent of “Day for Night”, a cinematic procedure by which night scenes are shot in daylight and subsequently darkened by means of special filters or other technical devices. On this backdrop the question of time in this scene – a sunlit day or a moonlit night – appears as unclear as the penguins’ strange appearance.

Bautista also examines the relation between nature and artificiality in a series of photographs from 2004 in which the McDonald’s logo plays a key part. San Joséshows it on the roof of an old, half-ruined and obviously abandoned house in a desolate location. In Paisaje it protrudes slightly from the water level of a quarry pond; the attached building must have sunk without a trace. And in Las Negras the last remains of a burger stand are seen disappearing into the sand of a white beach below dark cliffs, surrounded by unperturbed sunbathers.

All three works suggest that they have been produced at a time when the fast-food giant has been forgotten for decades, its architecture protruding from the earth like crumbling dinosaur bones. At first glance, these images in remembrance of a possible future appear melancholy, but soon we begin to suspect that Bautista, like a digitally operating voodoo sorcerer, is cursing the burger empire, which has long since become the epitome of global standarisation. However, thanks to their technical perfection and the nature of the content they stage, these images do not simply appear absurd. Rather, they resemble the documentation of an alteernative reality, which a different course of natural and human history might have brought about.

The subject of the video The Loser (2004) is related to the scenarios of Mcdonald’s downfall and involves a similar touch of malicious pleasure. The main character here is an astronaut. He is wearing a spacesuit and, powered by a rocket strapped to his back, speeds over the surface of a distant planet only to crash into the big “M” of a Mcdonald’s advertising sign that stands there in isolation.

When seen in connection with the previously mentioned video Imitation of Life, The Loser reveals the darker underlying tones of Bautista’s cosmos: though perfectly equipped in technical terms, man is no longer suited to heroism and ultimately fails because of his own refuse drifting in outer space; the only hero likely to survive a modern Odyssey, perhaps, is a completely insensitive, brightly polished piece of glass.
